Jules J. Bordet (1870-1961) earned a medical degree at the Free University of Brussels in 1892. In 1894, he began his research career at the Pasteur Institute in Paris working under Elie Metchnikoff. In 1900, Bordet returned to Brussels where he founded the Anti-Rabies and Bacteriologic Institute, later renamed the Pasteur Institute. From 1907-1935, he served as Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Brussels. His main area of research was antigen-antibody reactions, including the further development of the complement fixation test. In 1906, along with his brother-in-law Octave Gengou, Bordet discovered the etiology of whooping cough. In 1919, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his immunologic research.
