Rufin Schockaert (1875-1953) earned a medical degree in 1902 and was a Belgian Professor of Obstetrics who pioneered the separation of gynecology from obstetrics as a separate surgical specialty. He taught in French, the main language of the University at that time. The medal commemorates the silver anniversary of his academic career.
