Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585), also known as Dodonaeus, earned a medical degree at the Catholic University of Leuven (Louvain) in 1535. He became the personal physician to both Holy Roman Emperors Maximillian II and Rudolph II. In his last years, he was Professor of Botany at the University of Leyden. He is best known as a writer of botanical topics and is credited with the first detailed description of epidemic ergotism.
